Comparing funeral providers is difficult when time is short and emotions are high. A short, consistent set of questions can make the process clearer and help every provider respond to the same needs.
Ask for itemized price information
Request the General Price List and ask which charges are required, optional, or provided by someone else. The FTC Funeral Rule allows consumers to buy individual goods and services instead of accepting a package. You may also ask for price information by telephone without providing your name, address, or phone number.
Describe the same plan to each provider
Tell each provider whether you are considering burial, cremation, direct cremation, a viewing, a memorial service, transportation, or an out-of-area transfer. Ask what is included in the basic services fee and which costs may come from cemeteries, clergy, newspapers, government offices, or other third parties.
Questions worth writing down
- Who will be our main contact, and how are after-hours calls handled?
- What is the estimated total based on the choices we discussed?
- Which cash-advance or third-party items could change?
- What authorizations are required before embalming, cremation, or transportation?
- When will we receive a written statement of the selected goods and services?
- Can cultural, religious, accessibility, or scheduling needs be accommodated?
Compare fit as well as price
Response time, communication, transparency, facility access, and experience with your family’s preferences matter. Verify current licensing, written terms, and availability directly. Directory presence alone is not an endorsement.
