Funeral decisions often have to be made quickly, which makes clear pricing especially important. In Florida, families can use the Federal Trade Commission’s Funeral Rule as a starting point when comparing funeral homes, cremation providers, and related services.
Ask for an itemized General Price List
The FTC Funeral Rule requires covered funeral providers to give consumers a General Price List when discussing funeral goods, services, or prices in person. The list should show itemized prices and required disclosures. You generally have the right to select only the goods and services you want, except for certain required items and the provider’s basic services fee.
Compare the same items across providers
When comparing providers, ask each one for current pricing on the same core items: basic services fee, transfer of remains, embalming or other preparation, direct cremation, immediate burial, use of facilities and staff, vehicles, caskets or alternative containers, and any third-party cash-advance items.
Questions worth asking before you agree
- What is included in the quoted package and what is optional?
- Can I receive an itemized written estimate before authorizing services?
- Is embalming required in this situation, and if so, why?
- What lower-cost casket or cremation-container options are available?
- Which charges are paid to outside parties such as cemeteries, newspapers, florists, or crematories?
- What happens if I change or remove a service before it is performed?
Use two or three quotes when time allows
Even a short comparison can reveal meaningful differences in packages, required fees, and optional services. Focus on the total cost for the arrangement you actually want rather than the advertised starting price alone.
